Spring has sprung - the evenings are getting longer

and day light saving starts on the 28th September. Now is the time to set your fitness goals. Try looking on our shelves around 613.7 for all sorts of workouts, books on weight training, workouts on the Swiss Ball, books and DVDs on Yoga and Pilates.
But if you find it difficult to stay motivated at working out to “get fit” or “lose weight” try setting a goal that involves working towards a specific event.  If you need inspiration try reading Short Fat Chick to Marathon Runner by Kerre Woodham or Going the distance by Tracey Richardson. While Kere’s marathon or Tracey’s Ironman might seem like unattainable goals there are many shorter events - fun runs, triathlons, duathlons, and aquathons -which are within reach with some training.

Three years ago I couldn’t walk to the top of Cape Hill without stopping for a rest. I decided to do a woman’s triathlon, told family and friends I was going to do it, my mother and daughter decided to join me, I paid my entry fee, then it was too late to back out so I had to go out and do the training. I read books from bookinopolis on running, swimming and cycling that were aimed at beginners. The swimming and running were hard work but I remembered why I loved riding my bike so much as a kid. I haven’t done another triathlon since but I’ve entered cycling events of increasing length. A 100km cycling race would have seemed unimaginable once but I’ll be lining up for the Pukekohe Express in October and may even do a longer one before the summer is over.
