Auckland Libraries gives you guidance, resources and book lists to nurture a love of reading among children. We’ve also selected some top reading material for the April school holidays in case you’re currently stockpiling material for kids.

The ability to read is a gift that opens up an infinite world of knowledge and information. At Auckland Libraries, we have many initiatives to help turn children into avid readers.

 How to start or enhance a child’s love of reading
Among the topics covered in this comprehensive section are:

how to get kids started on books (including catalogue links to jigsaw puzzles, picture books with CDs etc)
recommendations for young independent readers
tips on choosing kids’ books
ideas on making non-fiction fun
lists of children’s book award winners.

Digital Library – eResources for children
A selection of eResources that includes renowned online encyclopaedias, online audio books and online collections to nurture a love of reading. Examples include BookFlix, CultureGrams, Discovering Collection, Encyclopaedia Britannica Junior Online, TumbleBooks and more.

 Kids eNewsletters
We can email you the latest kids’ and picture book titles on a regular basis. All you need to do is subscribe to our regular kids and picture book eNewsletters.   For previous issues, visit our website.

Recommended kids’ reading lists
Lists specifically created for kids aged 5 to 6; 6 to 9 and 9 to 11
Themed booklists including ‘After Harry Potter’, ‘Books for boys’, ‘Books for girls’ ‘Parenting’, ‘Anzac Day’, and ‘Excellent reads for NCEA English’.
Recommended lists searchable by title or tag
